The world continues to use millions of tonnes of concrete daily. Its impacts are virtually not realized yet harm biodiversity, impact habitats, exacerbate climate change, and eliminate resources. At CarbonX, our aim is to eliminate the potent effects of concrete on the environment by introducing greener solutions and alternatives to cement.



The Problem

The production of concrete generates about 8% of global emissions. The process of creating concrete involves heating limestone and other materials at high temperatures, releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Additionally, the transportation of raw materials and the energy required for production contribute to the carbon footprint of concrete.

The process of cement production is energy-intensive, while the demand for concrete in the construction industry is depleting natural resources and harming biodiversity. Tackling this issue is imperative for achieving sustainable development and reducing the impact of climate change.
1 : 1 CO2 emissions to concrete made
Concrete production is responsible for a 1:1 emission of carbon dioxide (CO2). This means that for every ton of concrete produced, one ton of CO2 is released into the atmosphere.




The method used worldwide for the production of concrete is highly energy intensive and gas emissive. From the mining of limestone to its decarbonization and burning of fossil fuels in the process, the production of concrete has harmful impacts on the environment by exacerbating global warming, destroying habitats, and reducing biodiversity. Concrete is the second most used material in the world coming after water, and if we need to have a good shot at reaching our climate goals, we need to advocate for making the concrete process greener and healthier for the environment.
The Solution
MAGNESITE
At CarbonX, we have replaced the traditional use of limestone in the production of clinker (cement), with magnesite, a raw material that calcinates at lower temperatures than limestone, is stronger, and can be synthesized from seawater and brine.

COMPACT AND PORTABLE KILN
Thanks to the use of magnesite, we are able to produce a highly compact kiln design that runs the decarbonization process, mixtures, and carbon capture all in one go. All parts of our solution build on each other.

ELECTRICALLY-POWERED ROTARY CORE
We want to reduce climate change. That means we eliminate the use of any and all fossil fuels. With our brand new E-Kiln design, this goal is achieved with the use of an electrically-powered, resistance-heated rotary kiln that is connected to the renewable energy grid. This alone diminishes all emissions from the burning of fossil fuels in the decarbonization process.
We are going to revolutionize the concrete industry with CarbonX's new solution. It features an all-electric rotary kiln with carbon capture technologies, and a highly compact, complex, and portable design, as well as the flexibility to take multiple material inputs at a time while producing a highly sustainable, durable, and cost-effective alternative to traditional clinker. With our two-pronged approach, CarbonX's E-Kiln can be easily distributed to construction sites without the need for transport and storage, further reducing overall emissions. Upwards of 60% of greenhouse gasses are eliminated with our product, so you never have to worry about the impact of the building you're sitting in.

The CarbonX E-Kiln
CarbonX rewrote the traditional cement manufacturing process with its all-new compact E-Kiln, which features carbon capture technologies, magnesite funnels, and an electrically heated rotary-kiln.

POWERED BY RENEWABLE ENERGY
Equipped with a Nichrome core heating element in the center of the rotary kiln, the CarbonX E-Kiln doesn't need to the use of fossil fuels for its decarbonisation process. Having the ability to connect to a hydroelectric power grid, you never have to worry about the negative impacts of our kiln. There are none! Prototyped and designed based on scientifically proven research and current ongoing work by green-concrete companies, our unique design involves the culmination of findings from hundreds of professionals in the industry. It works, and it's going to disrupt the concrete production process!
